Bayer Leverkusen coach Erik ten Hag is already facing an uncertain future just two games into the new Bundesliga season. The Dutchman has come under heavy criticism following a shaky start, with the club’s leadership declining to publicly back him.
Leverkusen’s latest result, a 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen on Saturday, has only deepened concerns. The team conceded two late goals to ten men, sparking unrest among fans and within the club. German outlet Kicker reported that doubts about Ten Hag’s suitability had already surfaced before the second match of the season, and the atmosphere around the BayArena has since turned “critical.”
Sporting director Simon Rolfes and the club’s management have so far remained silent on Ten Hag’s future. The lack of a vote of confidence is seen as a worrying sign, with observers suggesting that his authority in the dressing room is weakening.
Rolfes had earlier avoided endorsing Ten Hag during a live television interview before the Bremen game. After the match, officials again refused to make any comment about the coach’s position. The club has only said it will review the situation once the summer transfer window closes on Monday.
If performances do not improve quickly, the Dutchman could face the sack as early as next week, in what would be another major setback in his coaching career.
