AC Milan Appoints Massimiliano Allegri As New Head Coach

AC Milan has officially announced the departure of Portuguese coach Sergio Conceição and confirmed the return of veteran Italian manager Massimiliano Allegri as the new Head Coach of the men’s first team.

In a statement released on Friday, May 30, 2025, the club said, “AC Milan is pleased to announce that Massimiliano Allegri has been appointed as the Head Coach of the Men’s First Team.” The announcement comes after a disappointing 2024–25 season for the Rossoneri, in which they finished eighth in Serie A and failed to qualify for any European competition.

Conceição, who had been at the helm for only six months, was widely expected to be shown the door following the club’s poor run of form. His departure from the San Siro was confirmed after several weeks of speculation.

Allegri, 57, returns to AC Milan after more than a decade. Born in Livorno on August 11, 1967, Allegri is a former midfielder who played for clubs including Pisa, Napoli, and Pescara in Serie A. He began his coaching career in 2002 and made his Serie A managerial debut with Cagliari in 2008. He first joined Milan in 2010, guiding the club to their 18th league title in his debut season, followed by the Italian Super Cup in 2011.

After leaving Milan in 2014, Allegri went on to a highly successful spell with Juventus, where he won five Serie A titles, five Coppa Italia trophies, and two Italian Super Cups across two stints, the most recent ending in 2024.

Allegri had been out of management since leaving Juventus last summer, with earlier rumours linking him to Napoli. However, after Antonio Conte decided to remain at the helm of the southern club, Allegri was left without a destination — until Milan came calling.

According to Italian football journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Allegri is expected to sign a two-year contract with the Rossoneri.

AC Milan will begin their 2025–26 campaign with a Coppa Italia match against Serie B side Bari. However, Allegri will not be on the sidelines for that game due to a suspension carried over from his final match in charge of Juventus — the 2024 Coppa Italia final against Atalanta, where he was sent off.

“The Club extends a warm welcome and best wishes to Massimiliano and his staff,” AC Milan added in their statement.
