Tears and Tough Times: Antony Opens Up About Manchester United Struggles

Brazilian footballer Antony has revealed the emotional toll his difficult time at Manchester United took on him, saying he sometimes went days without eating.

Antony joined Manchester United in 2022 from Dutch club Ajax for a record £85 million (about KSh 15.2 billion). However, he struggled to live up to expectations at Old Trafford, scoring just 12 goals in 96 matches.

In January, he was loaned out to Spanish club Real Betis, where he has since rediscovered his form. The 25-year-old winger has scored nine goals and made five assists, helping Betis reach the UEFA Conference League final.

Speaking to TNT Sports Brazil, Antony opened up about his struggles both on and off the pitch during his time in England.

“Moving to Betis changed everything,” he said. “I needed to find myself again because of everything I had gone through in my personal life. I wanted to play well, but things weren’t working out. I wasn’t happy, and I didn’t feel the desire to play football anymore.”

He admitted that the tough period left him emotionally drained. “I went through a lot at Manchester United. I lost the joy of playing. I even told my brother that I couldn’t take it anymore.”
