The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced new guidelines for administering the July 2025 KCSE examination. In a circular addressed to all County Directors of Education, KNEC CEO David Njengere confirmed that the mid-year exam will be introduced this year.
Registration for the examination is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 27, 2025, and will be conducted through the KNEC portal under the coordination of County Directors of Education (CDEs) at county headquarters.
Who Can Register for July 2025 KCSE Examination?
The July KCSE series is specifically designed for repeat candidates, those who missed previous exams, and adult learners who are not in regular schools but can provide proof of primary education qualifications. Learners currently enrolled in regular schools are not eligible to register for this series.
“All repeaters and private candidates must register for the July series and not the November KCSE examination series,” the circular emphasized.
Candidates are required to present the following documents during registration:
- National ID or birth certificate/passport
- KCPE examination certificate
- KCSE examination results (for repeaters)
- A soft copy of a passport-sized photo
Private candidates must also download and complete a registration form under the guidance of education officers, ensure the passport photo meets requirements, and adhere to all stated guidelines.

The registration fee for the July KCSE exam is Sh7,200 and should be paid through the e-Citizen platform. KNEC has clarified that there is no limit on the number of times a candidate can sit for the exam, provided they meet the registration requirements.
KNEC has already issued a timetable for the July series, ensuring candidates have sufficient time to prepare. The council has urged interested individuals to complete the registration process before the deadline.
