“Secret Level” Brings Video Games To TV Amid Fan Expectations

Amazon’s animated anthology series Secret Level is making waves with its bold adaptation of popular video game franchises.

The show features 15 episodes, each inspired by a different game, from retro classics like Pac-Man to modern hits such as Honor of Kings and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

Producer Tim Miller acknowledges the challenge of meeting fans’ high expectations, admitting, “We’re not afraid of the companies. We’re afraid of the fans.”

With video game adaptations gaining popularity in Hollywood, Secret Level follows Amazon’s successful Fallout series and its new deal with Games Workshop to create Warhammer-themed films and shows.

Director Dave Wilson highlights the complexity of adapting game lore, especially with Warhammer 40,000’s deep universe.

“If you take [the lore] too literally, you can’t have a hero make a choice if he’s not afraid of the consequences,” he explains.

The show balances authenticity with compelling storytelling.

The star-studded cast includes Keanu Reeves, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kevin Hart, and video game voice actors like Laura Bailey from The Last of Us: Part II and Clive Standen, reprising his role from Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

Wilson believes keeping game actors maintains continuity and honors their contributions to gaming franchises.

Despite early mixed reviews, Miller hopes for respectful discussions, acknowledging gaming’s passionate community.

He encourages healthier online discourse, saying, “Sometimes you may not hit the mark, but most people are earnest and trying to create something special.”

Secret Level is now streaming on Prime Video.
