Six Columns In Crystal Palace Named House Of The Year By RIBA

A four-bedroom property in south-east London, Six Columns, has been awarded House of the Year by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Designed by 31/44 Architects, the house was constructed on a plot made up of several patches of gardens purchased from neighboring properties in Crystal Palace.

RIBA President Muyiwa Oki praised the house for its blend of Brutalist influences and creative elements, while still maintaining a strong connection to its suburban environment.

“Six Columns is a beautifully crafted family home that cleverly incorporates Brutalist references and creative flourishes while retaining a strong sense of suburban belonging,” Oki said.

The house triumphed over other shortlisted properties, including Peckham House in south London, Eavesdrop in Sussex, and Farmworker’s House in Cornwall.

The Hall in Kent and Plas Hendy Stable Block in Monmouthshire were also contenders for the prestigious title.

Oki further emphasized that Six Columns demonstrates what can be achieved even with limited space, showcasing a flexible design that can adapt to the changing needs of its occupants over time.

“The generosity of space belies the limitations of this small garden plot,” he noted.

Je Ahn, chair of the House of the Year jury, highlighted the unique nature of one-off houses, emphasizing that Six Columns exemplifies the idea that homes are ever-evolving spaces.

“Your home is not a static slice of time, but continuously evolves with you,” Ahn said.
