The BBC has decided to pull the Christmas editions of MasterChef following allegations of inappropriate sexual comments made against presenter Gregg Wallace.
Initially, the BBC had confirmed that all previously filmed episodes, including the festive specials, would air as scheduled.
However, following mounting pressure and an investigation into the allegations, the BBC has reversed its decision.
Gregg Wallace stepped aside from his presenting duties last week after a BBC News investigation uncovered accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior from multiple individuals who worked on various BBC productions.
Wallace’s lawyers have denied the claims, stating he does not engage in sexually harassing behavior.
Two festive specials were set to air this December.
One, titled Celebrity MasterChef Christmas Cook Off, featured celebrity contestants including The Wanted singer Max George and Emmerdale actor Amy Walsh.
The second, MasterChef Meets Strictly Festive Extravaganza, was to showcase Strictly Come Dancing stars like Amy Dowden and Gorka Marquez.
The decision to pull the specials comes after Wallace’s controversial comments on social media, where he downplayed the allegations, referring to them as complaints from a “handful of middle-class women of a certain age.”
His remarks caused a backlash, including criticism from a Downing Street spokesperson, who described the comments as “inappropriate and misogynistic.”
In response to the growing controversy, Wallace issued a public apology, acknowledging the offense his comments caused and expressing regret for his actions.
He explained that he was under significant emotional stress when he made the post and recognized the need to step back during the ongoing investigation.
The BBC’s change in stance also follows an investigation by production company Banijay UK, with Wallace reportedly cooperating.
Allegations from former colleagues include Wallace making sexually explicit remarks, sharing inappropriate stories, and engaging in other uncomfortable behavior in front of staff and contestants.
While some former colleagues have shared positive experiences with Wallace, others have described a pattern of behavior that made them feel uncomfortable.
The BBC has stated that it will continue to listen to those who wish to come forward with concerns, and the investigation remains ongoing.
