Melanie Walters, known for her iconic role as Gwen West in Gavin and Stacey, has shared her excitement ahead of the show’s long-awaited final episode, airing on Christmas Day.
The beloved sitcom returns after five years, picking up from the cliffhanger proposal where Nessa asked Smithy to marry her.
Despite knowing the script’s outcome, Melanie revealed she will be watching the final 90-minute episode alongside the audience for the first time, as the team is still putting the finishing touches on the episode.
“Obviously I’ve read the script, so I know what happens, but they’re still editing it because we only finished it in October,” she explained.
Reflecting on her 17 years with the show, Melanie expressed her pride in being part of Gavin and Stacey, a project that has earned a lasting place in viewers’ hearts.
“The love for it from the public is extraordinary,” she said during a BBC Radio Bristol interview.
“I’m just incredibly proud of it as a show, and will always be hugely grateful for having been cast in it.”
Despite the widespread recognition, Melanie remains humbled by her role.
“I don’t think anybody knows my name is Melanie Walters. I’m known as Gwen,” she laughed. “You can’t be cross at that though. It’s because people like it so much.”
As the series wraps up, Melanie fondly reminisced about the deep bond among the cast, describing each reunion as feeling like “old friends reuniting.”
“It’s like that really close friend you’ve not seen for years and years, and when you finally see them, it’s like you’ve never been apart,” she shared.
Beyond Gavin and Stacey, Melanie has had a successful career in film and television, but her heart is set on stage performances.
She is currently gearing up for her role as ‘Fairy Camembert’ in a pantomime production of Beauty and the Beast at the Playhouse Theatre in Weston-super-Mare, running from 7 to 31 December.
