Bob Bryar, the longest-serving drummer for American rock band My Chemical Romance (MCR), has died at the age of 44.
The news, reported by US media outlets, confirms his passing at his Tennessee home. A spokesperson for the band asked for privacy and understanding as they process the loss.
Bryar joined MCR in 2004, after the release of their second album, and was instrumental in shaping the band’s sound.
He contributed to The Black Parade, the band’s critically acclaimed album that NPR Music called a “defining album” of the genre.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Bryar studied sound engineering at the University of Florida before meeting MCR while working as a sound engineer for a support band on their 2004 tour.
His friendship with the band led to him replacing original drummer Matt Pelissier.
Despite facing significant health challenges, including third-degree burns from a 2006 music video accident that led to infections, Bryar continued to tour with the band.
He also dealt with wrist issues, which led to temporary replacements before his departure in 2010. At the time, the band called it a “painful decision.”
He had contributed to MCR’s fourth studio album, which featured five of his songwriting credits.
Bryar retired from the music industry in 2021, citing ongoing wrist issues. He auctioned off band memorabilia to support animal charities.
My Chemical Romance, who disbanded in 2013 but reunited in 2019, are scheduled for a US stadium tour in 2025.
Bryar’s legacy remains integral to MCR’s influential rise in the rock world.
