The city of Port Charles bid farewell to Sam McCall on the Nov. 1 episode of General Hospital, marking the end of Kelly Monaco’s 21-year run on the show.
Despite her character’s exit, Monaco’s close friend and longtime costar Dominic Zamprogna, who played her love interest on the soap, has continued to stay in touch with her.
In an interview with Soap Opera Digest published on Nov. 6, Dominic shared that he still checks in on Kelly every week.
He reflected on the advice he gave her during this transition, saying, “I’ve found the greatest things in my life have come when it feels like a door is closing,” encouraging her to remain open to the possibilities ahead.
He also left the door open for a potential return, adding, “It’s a soap. Who the heck knows what’s gonna happen?”
Dominic went on to speak about the deep friendship he developed with Kelly over the years.
“The three-and-a-half years that we were together on the show were a big, important time of my life,” he said, emphasizing the strong bond they built during that period.
“Everyone in the crew becomes like family, your castmates become like family,” he continued, acknowledging how much Kelly has meant to him both personally and professionally.
Praising Kelly’s character, Dominic described her as “softer than her tough Philly exterior.”
He described her as “remarkable” and admired her strength, saying, “She’s tough as nails and admirable in so many ways, and it’s been cool to become a friend of hers.”
Their connection grew to the point where they shared many personal moments. “We became very able to tell each other very personal things and kind of talk each other through moments,” he shared.
Despite Kelly’s tough-girl persona on-screen, Dominic noted that she is “extremely cool and confident” in a way that made their friendship even more meaningful.
