Government Migrates NHIF Accounts To New Social Health Authority Platform

The Kenyan government has begun migrating National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) accounts to a newly developed platform under the Social Health Authority (SHA) as part of efforts to streamline healthcare services under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.

While the move aims to centralize health coverage for citizens, it has sparked concerns among many Kenyans.

Several Kenyans have reported receiving messages notifying them of the migration, with the text reading: “Your NHIF account has been migrated successfully to Social Health Authority. To update your profile, dial 147#, visit sha.go.ke, or any authorized SHA agent.”

The migration seeks to create a more integrated approach to healthcare, but the manner in which it has been implemented has raised questions about consent and data transparency.

Many Kenyans have expressed unease on social media, voicing concerns over the automatic migration occurring without prior consent.

Critics have highlighted the NHIF’s past issues with ghost members, arguing that the automatic transfer of data to the SHA could complicate efforts to clean the registry and validate membership.

Some have also questioned whether the migration will compromise the goal of building a reliable health insurance database by not allowing members to re-register afresh.

In September, about 2.5 million Kenyans were newly registered under the SHA, indicating some resistance to the migration.

However, by October 1, registrations had surged to 12 million, with approximately 9.9 million of these coming from the defunct NHIF, suggesting that the automatic transfer of NHIF data was a key factor in the sharp increase.
