Barcelona have officially confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after Marc-Andre ter Stegen was sidelined with a long-term knee injury.
Szczesny, who retired in the summer, has been persuaded to return and will stay with the club for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.
The Polish international has signed a contract with Barcelona until June 2025.
This move comes after a major setback for the Catalan side during their La Liga clash against Villarreal last month.
Despite cruising to a 5-1 victory, Barcelona lost their captain and goalkeeper, Ter Stegen, who was stretchered off the pitch in tears.
Medical assessments later revealed that the German star suffered a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee, ruling him out for the rest of the season.
Barcelona’s official statement read: “FC Barcelona and Wojciech SzczÄ™sny have reached an agreement for the goalkeeper to join the Club until 30 June 2025.”
Szczesny will now compete with Inaki Pena for the starting goalkeeper position.
Barcelona’s next test comes in La Liga on Sunday against Alaves, following a 5-0 Champions League victory over Young Boys earlier this week.
