Ukraine Boxing Champ Oleksandr Usyk Released After Poland Detention

Undisputed heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk has been released following his detention at Krakow airport in Poland. The news was confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who expressed outrage over the situation but reassured that Usyk was now free.

Usyk, a national hero in Ukraine for his support of Kyiv’s war efforts and humanitarian work, described the incident as a misunderstanding that was quickly resolved. He praised the Polish law enforcement officers for their professionalism and expressed gratitude for the support he received from fans and the public.

The exact reasons for Usyk’s detention remain unclear, as Poland’s foreign and interior ministries have not yet commented. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized the detention as “disproportionate and unacceptable,” and indicated that his ministry would be in touch with Polish authorities.

Usyk, who won the undisputed heavyweight titles in May by defeating Tyson Fury, has been actively involved in aiding Ukraine through his charity, the Usyk Foundation. His wife, Yekaterina Usyk, also expressed relief on social media that the situation had been resolved.
