Kenyan singer Bahati recently delivered a touching tribute to the late Teresa Auma, the mother of fellow musician and longtime friend Mr. Seed. During a memorial service at New Beginnings Church on September 12, Bahati opened up about the profound impact Teresa had on his life, describing her as more than just Mr. Seed’s mother—she was a mother figure to him as well.
Bahati, whose friendship with Mr. Seed dates back to their childhood in Mathare, recounted the strong bond he shared with the family. He met Mr. Seed when they were both young dancers, and after losing his parents, Bahati often relied on the kindness of others for meals and shelter. “This is not just mama Mr. Seed; she was my mother during a critical time of my life,” he shared. After staying in a children’s home for some time, Bahati moved in with Mr. Seed’s family, where Teresa welcomed him with open arms, even helping him through secondary school.
One of Bahati’s most cherished memories of Teresa was her unwavering support as he pursued his music career. She was always there, cheering him on as he struggled to find his footing in the industry. In a heartfelt moment, Bahati revealed how she sewed clothes for him for free, including the outfit for his first engagement and introduction with his wife, Diana. “She has been a true mum. Even though Mr. Seed and I would sometimes argue, we would always call the same mother at the end of the day,” he said.
Bahati expressed deep admiration for Teresa’s ability to stay neutral during any disagreements between him and Mr. Seed. “One thing I loved about mum is that she never cared about the nonsense going on between us. She wanted both of us to succeed,” he shared.
Regrettably, Bahati admitted that one of his biggest sorrows was not visiting Teresa when she was ill, despite their regular phone conversations. “You think you have time, you say, ‘I’ll go tomorrow,’ but I kept postponing, and now I deeply regret it,” he confessed.
The emotional tribute culminated in a moving performance by Bahati, who sang a special song in honor of Mr. Seed’s late mother. With tears streaming down his face, Bahati’s heartfelt tribute touched everyone present, a fitting farewell to a woman who meant so much to him and his journey.
