The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has refuted claims of mining activities taking place within Tsavo East National Park.
The denial comes in response to images circulating online, which appeared to show large canals dug into the ground.
KWS clarified that these images are not from Tsavo East National Park. Instead, they originate from the Galana Kulalu Food Security Project, located in Galana Ranch, which is near the park.
“This project is being spearheaded by the State Department of Irrigation and Is aimed at enhancing food security in Kenya through large-scale irrigation and sustainable farming practices,” KWS said in a statement.
“As part of the program, canals are being constructed to facilitate water flow into irrigation farms.”
KWS emphasized their ongoing commitment to conserving and protecting Kenya’s national parks and wildlife heritage.
The Galana Kulalu project is situated to the east of Tsavo East National Park and can be accessed via the Malindi-Tsavo Road.
