Iggy Azalea has clarified that she is the sole parent to her son Onyx, following her split from Playboi Carti.
In a recent episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s on Me” podcast, Azalea, 34, discussed her experience as a single mother.
The rapper, who welcomed Onyx with Carti, 28, in June 2020, revealed that she has been raising her son alone since their breakup just four months after his birth.
Azalea made it clear that she is not co-parenting, saying, “I’m very much a single mother, I’m very much the only parent. No disrespect, but I am not co-parenting, really. That’s just the reality of it. It’s 24/7.”
Azalea highlighted the crucial role of her mother, Tanya, who also raised her as a single parent. She has also been working with a life coach regularly to navigate life post-breakup and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s helped me so much in every which way of my life,” she said. “But with my mom, the way that she’s really like helped me so much, just by being there.”
Onyx, now four, has developed an interest in music and has even started writing his own songs. Azalea expressed some concern about her young son pursuing a career in music but affirmed her support for his interests. “He’s been writing songs lately, which terrifies me,” she admitted.
“I’m like ‘It’s fine, it’s fine, he’s four. I really don’t want you to be an artist, don’t go in the industry, no.’ But you know I have to support whatever he wants to do.”
She also shared that Onyx enjoys watching her music videos, particularly her 2014 hit “Black Widow” featuring Rita Ora. Azalea did not mention whether Onyx is a fan of Carti’s music.
Azalea and Carti began their relationship in 2018 and their son was born two years later. The relationship ended after Carti did not spend Christmas with Onyx, leading Azalea to accuse him of cheating in a series of now-deleted tweets.
