Four years after giving us Music to Be Murdered By, Eminem is taking a quasi-investigational approach with The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), out today.
The run-up to the concept album, Em’s 12th, has incorporated everything from a fake obituary for the Slim Shady character to an album trailer filmed in the style of a true crime documentary. As the first Em album to center on his Slim alter ego in quite some time, the title’s tease of a “death” has spurred many to revisit key moments from the Oscar- and Grammy-winning artist’s back catalog.

Chief among such moments, as you’ve surely seen pointed out a few times amid lore-focused discussions in recent months, is a line on the 2009 Relapse track “My Darling.” The song sees Em and Slim in an escalating war of words, with the presumed impossibility of the character’s permanent demise laid bare like so:

Ahead of the Coup de Grâce, Em rolled out Shady-heavy videos for the singles “Houdini” and “Tobey.” While the first walked viewers through different eras of Slim over the years thanks to a well-placed time portal, the latter boasted the familiar presence of a chainsaw and more than enough splattered blood to suggest a brutal demise.
