Serena Williams Says Drake Diss “Not Like Us” Is the ‘Hit of the Summer’: ‘That Jam Is Jamming’
Serena Williamslauded Kendrick Lamar’s latest track “Not Like Us” as the “hit of the summer” during a panel discussion at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans.
Speaking passionately about the song, Williams expressed her enthusiasm despite some initial reservations from the moderator to delve into the topic of the diss track aimed at Drake, with whom Williams has been linked romantically in the past.
“I love that song. It’s like the hit of the summer. When they play that jam, I’m jamming,” Williams remarked during the panel. “That jam is jamming.”

“You definitely Crip walking in that song. It’s so cool what he did though. Bringing everyone to the stage? That was incredible … I couldn’t believe it,” she added, referring to Kendrick Lamar’s impactful group photo displayed across billboards in Compton.
The discussion brought up nostalgic moments, touching on Williams’ roots in Compton and its rich cultural tapestry. “Growing up in Compton was a special time. I mean, we grew up around the time it was Dr. Dre and Eazy-E,” she reflected. “And then Snoop Dogg was in Lynwood, which is literally the next street over from where we lived in Compton.”
Reflecting on her childhood amidst the backdrop of legendary hip-hop artists, Williams recalled training on Compton courts and in Watts, underscoring the influence of her upbringing on her career and cultural outlook.
“It’s crazy how small that community was, yet it produced so many amazing artists and athletes who mean so much to the world,” Williams continued. “So it’s just really cool memories and just really cool things to look back on.”
