Hundreds of anti-riot police have been deployed to various towns across Kenya ahead of planned protests to mourn those killed during past demonstrations against the now-rejected Finance Bill 2024.
The deployment, which began on Tuesday, July 2, aims to preempt any potential violence during the demonstrations.
Police officials have said that they are taking necessary precautions to maintain law and order and to ensure the safety of citizens and property.
Additionally, the military has been deployed to critical infrastructure sites across the country to support police efforts, particularly in safeguarding key facilities and assisting prison officials.
However, authorities have clarified that the military’s role is strictly supportive and they will not be directly involved in controlling protests. In Nairobi, military personnel were observed stationed at Nyayo Stadium as part of these precautionary measures.
Organizers of the protests have reiterated their commitment to peaceful demonstrations, emphasizing that their primary goals include mourning the deceased and advocating for improved governance.
At least 39 fatalities have been reported in connection with previous protests against the Finance Bill 2024, with casualties recorded in various locations including Nairobi, Nakuru, Laikipia, and Mombasa among others.
In anticipation of the protests, police in Nairobi have implemented roadblocks and closures near State House, affecting major thoroughfares such as Dennis Pritt Road, State House Avenue, and Processional Way. Similar security measures have been observed in other major towns across the country.
During previous attempts to march in Nairobi and other urban centers, police were initially deployed on June 27 to prevent disturbances related to the Finance Bill 2024.
President William Ruto’s decision to decline signing the bill and urge Parliament to revise its contents followed widespread public outcry and protests against its provisions.
In response to ongoing developments, major businesses in affected areas remained closed, and traffic was notably sparse. Police have assured businesses that opted to open of their safety amid the heightened security environment.
